GMO strain (GMO Cookies, Garlic Cookies)

GMO Cookies, also sold as GMO and as Garlic Cookies, is an indica-dominant hybrid of Chemdawg and Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) credited to Mamiko Seeds; Weedmaps says the famous cut is a keeper Skunkmasterflex found in Mamiko’s Chem Cookies seeds, a Chem D × Forum-cut GSC cross.1,2 It tests at a median total THC of 26.74% across 2,159 state lab tests of GMO Cookies flower, with the middle half of results between 23.46% and 29.83%.3 CBD is negligible: none of the 1,340 tests that reported CBD reached 1%.3

What does GMO stand for in weed?

Accounts differ. "Garlic, mushroom, onion" is the popular expansion, and Weedmaps lists Garlic Mushroom Onion as another name while calling that explanation lore rather than settled.2,8 Leafly says Skunkmasterflex named it after news about genetically modified ingredients in a popular brand of cookies, and because the plant grew as if scientists had modified it.7,9 It is not genetically modified: the breeder’s note on SeedFinder calls it a cross of Chemdawg D and a GSC Forum cut.6

Is GMO indica or sativa?

An indica-dominant hybrid. AllBud lists 90% indica / 10% sativa, as do Barney’s Farm’s and Zamnesia’s seed versions, and Leafly rates its effects mostly calming; Weedmaps and SeedFinder file it simply as a hybrid.1,2,4,5,6,10

What strain is GMO?

GMO is GMO Cookies, also called Garlic Cookies: a cross of Chemdawg and Girl Scout Cookies. Mamiko Seeds of Spain released the seeds, and Skunkmasterflex of Skunk House Genetics germinated the winning plant and named it.1,7,9

How strong is GMO?

High. The median total THC across 2,159 state lab tests was 26.74%, and 64.8% of tests reached 25% or more.3 Of the 43 strains in our dataset with at least 100 tests, none had a higher median. In every year with at least 100 tests (2020–2023) the yearly median stayed between 25.90% and 28.75%.3

Are GMO, GMO Cookies and Garlic Cookies the same strain?

Yes: three names for one strain. Leafly’s editors note that because "GMO" may bother some, it is also sold as Garlic Cookies.1,11 On the lab certificates in our data the most common label is plain GMO (1,246 of 2,159 tests).3 Sour Garlic Cookies, from Bloom Seed Co, is listed by Leafly as a separate strain.12

What does GMO taste like?

Garlic and fuel. Leafly describes a diesel aroma and a garlic-forward taste and lists chemical, pepper and pungent flavors; on Weedmaps, 38% of flavor reports say earthy, 32% pungent and 31% diesel, and Weedmaps adds skunk, damp earth, pepper and savory onion over a sweet, doughy background.1,2

  • GMO Cookies ranks 1st by median total THC among 58 strains, with 26.74%, and Blue Cheese is next below at 25.93%.3
  • For GMO Cookies, the THC floor was high in the lab set: 89% met 20%, 65% met 25%, and 23% met 30%.3
  • Limonene led the terpene table in 61% of 456 individual-terpene tests, ahead of β-myrcene at 22%.3

Cup winner, critics’ pick and parent of best sellers

GMO Cookies took first place among indica flowers at the 2017 Midwest Cannabis Cup, and that December High Times put it on its list of the 10 best strains of 2018.13,14 It placed 4th in Mixed Light and 7th in Sungrown at the 2019 Emerald Cup, according to Leafly, whose editors list it among their 100 best strains of all time; in 2024 it was one of Leafly’s 25 most-viewed strain pages, out of more than 8,000.9,11 Budtenders surveyed by Leafly named it Oregon’s best strain of 2023.15

Leafly’s 2024 profile counted GMO among the 100 most prevalent strains in stores from coast to coast.9 In The Marijuana Herald’s state-by-state roundup for August 2026, the top sellers in Connecticut, Missouri and Oregon were Mule Fuel, Triple Burger and Hash Burger, all GMO descendants by Leafly’s lineages, and its child Kitchen Sink was Oklahoma’s budtenders’ pick for 2024.16,17,18,19,20,21 It is the third most-tested of the 58 strains in our dataset, after Wedding Cake and Ice Cream Cake.3
